Memorable meals, funny moments and the stories people still tell about you.

  1. What meal with a friend became memorable for something besides the food?

Anong kainan ninyo ng friend ang tumatak dahil sa nangyari, hindi lang dahil sa pagkain?

    Back of the card

If this meal's story had a title, what would it be?

  2. Think of someone who makes simple meals more fun. What do they do?

Isipin yung taong nagpapasaya kahit simpleng kain lang. Ano yung ginagawa niya?

    Back of the card

  3. Share a small mistake or awkward moment that feels funny now.

    Back of the card

A small fail gets lighter once it becomes a story. Sometimes the best part is realizing everyone survives awkward little moments.

  4. Recall a harmless mistake that became a good story later.

Anong pagkakamali ang nakakatawa nang balikan ngayon, na wala namang nasaktan?

Ikuwento yung pagkain na nagpapaalala sa'yo ng alaga ng isang tao.

    Back of the card

How to use them

Before you ask

A dinner date has a built-in shape, and the questions can follow it: food opinions while you read the menu, stories once the first plates arrive, something closer over dessert. Pacing questions to the meal keeps the conversation from peaking during the appetizer and stalling by the main course.

The common dinner-date problem is the lull after ordering. You have both said what you’re getting, the server leaves, and suddenly the table feels very small. A food question fills that gap naturally, because you are both looking at food. Stories come easier once you are eating and relaxed.

The dessert set is written for people who are already together; on an early date, stay with the first two groups. Leave the phones in your pockets for the whole meal if you can, even for photos of the food.

Good for

  • Restaurant date nights
  • Anniversary and birthday dinners
  • Trying a new restaurant together
  • Long tasting menus
  • Cooking a fancy dinner at home

Tips

  1. Ask the menu questions while you decide; it gives the first minutes a job.
  2. Order something to share. Shared plates start conversations.
  3. Match the question to the course: lighter early, warmer late.
  4. If the restaurant is loud, sit side by side instead of across.
  5. Save the last question for the walk or the drive home.

Dinner date

Frequently asked questions

What do you talk about on a dinner date?

Start with food: cravings, a go-to order, a dish you disagree about. Then share stories about memorable meals and funny moments. With a partner, finish with something about the two of you over dessert.

How do you avoid awkward silence at dinner?

Have a food question ready for the moment after you order, when lulls usually happen. Questions about the meal you’re sharing are easy for anyone to answer.

Can we play these at the table without being rude to the restaurant?

Yes. Pick a few ahead of time, or open the Kumustahan app between courses and draw one card. A phone on the table for one card is very different from scrolling.
