How to use them
Before you ask
Brunch is a catch-up meal, and catch-ups tend to run on updates: work is busy, the trip was nice, the apartment hunt continues. The best brunch questions ask for stories instead: what made you laugh this week when you least expected it, the plan that went wrong, the word someone misheard.
There’s a moment at every good brunch when the plates are cleared, the server refills the coffee and nobody moves. That’s the window for the second-round questions: a new interest your friends might be surprised by, the part of your personality that’s been showing up lately, an activity you’d love to get them into.
End with the next plan. Brunch friendships often run on “we should do this more often” and then three months pass. Ask what kind of hangout would welcome a newcomer, or what would ease the month ahead, and put a date on it before the check arrives.
Good for
Tips
- Ask for a story, not an update: “What happened this week?” beats “How’s work?”.
- Save the deeper ones for the second cup.
- Rotate who picks the question each time the group meets.
- Book the next brunch at the table.
- For a Galentine’s brunch, see Galentine’s Day questions.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about at brunch with friends?
Easy picks while waiting, stories from the week instead of status updates, more personal questions over the second cup of coffee, and plans to meet again before the check.
How do you make a catch-up feel less like small talk?
Ask for specific stories (what made you laugh, what plan went wrong) rather than general updates. Specific questions get specific, interesting answers.
Can we use these at a restaurant?
Yes. Open the free Kumustahan app on one phone and pass it around the table; it’s quieter than a board game.
