How to use them
Before you ask
Galentine’s Day is for telling your friends what you usually only tell other people about them. The best questions make room for that: which ability a friend saw in you before you did, the compliment you still remember, the friend you can sit in silence with.
Brunch has a habit of becoming a catch-up session where everyone reports on work, dating and family in turn. That’s fine for half an hour. Then one good question changes the table from updates to stories, and stories are why you booked the reservation.
End with the self-kindness questions if the mood is right. February can be a heavy month, and hearing your friends answer how they talk to themselves on bad days is often the most loving part of the whole celebration.
Good for
Tips
- Go around the table on the love-notes round: each person answers about the friend to her left.
- Put the phones in the middle and leave them there until the coffee is gone.
- Write one answer on a small card for each friend to take home.
- Keep it about friendship. Dating talk will happen anyway; it doesn’t need a prompt.
- Celebrating as a couple too? See the Valentine’s Day questions.
