How to use them

Before you ask

A girls night doesn’t need help getting started. It needs help going somewhere new. Old friends tend to repeat the same updates, the same jokes and the same complaints. A few questions get you to stories you haven’t told each other yet, and to the honest conversation that usually only happens at 1 a.m.

Start silly, with food fights and funny photos, while the snacks are still out. Move to friend stories once everyone is settled: first impressions, inside jokes, things you’re good at that your friends never see. The last set is softer, about friendship and the pressure everyone puts on themselves. Let it happen late, not as an agenda.

It works for a new group too: a book club, coworkers, moms from school. For a group that has never met, start with the questions for someone you just met instead.

Good for

  • Girls night in, with wine or tea
  • Galentine’s and birthday nights
  • Bachelorette weekends that need a quiet hour
  • Book clubs and moms’ nights out
  • Long-overdue catch-ups with old friends

Tips

  1. Put the phone with the questions in the middle and let whoever is holding the snacks draw.
  2. Ask one person a card, then let everyone add their answer.
  3. Keep the honest set for late, when the group is small and settled.
  4. Nobody has to share more than they want; passing is always fine.
  5. Write down the best stories. They make good birthday messages later.

What do girls talk about at a sleepover or girls night?

Food, friends, funny moments and, later in the night, what is really going on in their lives. Good questions just make it easier to get past the usual updates.

How do you make a girls night more meaningful?

Ask one honest question late in the night, when the group is relaxed, like how each person wants friends to react to good news or when they are too tired for plans. Then listen more than you talk.
