How to use them
Before you ask
At a speed friending event, the best question finds something you have in common before the bell rings. Five minutes goes fast, and if four of them go to jobs and neighborhoods, you leave with a stack of names you can’t tell apart.
Open with something light and a little imaginative, like a language they’d wake up fluent in or a free ticket to anywhere. Then look for overlap: a hobby they’d go back to with an hour a week, an activity they’d love to introduce friends to. Overlap gives you a reason to meet again.
In the last minute, ask something that shows how they are as a friend, like what they naturally take care of at a hangout, or which simple hangout they’d happily repeat. That’s the answer you’ll remember when you look at the match card later.

Tips
- Have one opener and one common-ground question ready; improvise the rest.

- Leave work out of the first minute.
Decks for this
If you’re hosting a speed friending night
A simple format that keeps the energy up for about an hour:
- Rounds of five to seven minutes, with one printed question per table that changes every round.
- A bell at four minutes, so pairs can wrap up naturally.
- A card for each guest to note names and one thing they’d do together.
- Twenty minutes of open mingling at the end, so good matches can keep talking.
Speed friending
Frequently asked questions
What questions should you ask at speed friending?
An imaginative opener, then questions that find common ground, like a hobby they’d go back to or an activity they’d introduce friends to. In the last minute, ask something that shows what they’re like as a friend.
How does speed friending work?
Like speed dating, but for friendship: short rotating one-on-one chats, usually five to seven minutes, then a chance to note who you’d like to see again. Many events end with open mingling.
How do you stand out in a five-minute conversation?
Ask an unusual opener, listen closely, and refer back to something they said. People remember the person who remembered them.
