How to use them

Before you ask

A what would you do question puts someone in a situation and asks for their move. The good ones aren’t moral dilemmas with a right answer. They’re situations people actually meet, which means everyone at the table has a real answer, and often a story to go with it.

That’s also why they work in groups that don’t know each other well. Telling a room what you do when a group photo starts is easy and a bit funny. Telling them how you’d patch things up after a confusing message from a friend is a step closer, and by then people usually want to answer.

Listen for the differences. One person handles a ruined plan by making a new one in thirty seconds; another goes home and rests. Neither is wrong, and the contrast is the conversation. For dilemmas with two fixed options, use would you rather instead.

Good for

  • Team lunches and new-hire weeks
  • Youth groups and classrooms
  • Friends comparing how they handle things
  • Roommates working out house habits
  • Teens who roll their eyes at deep questions

Tips

  1. Ask what they actually do, not what they should do.
  2. After each answer, ask whether anyone does the opposite.
  3. Share your own worst reaction. It makes honest answers easier.
  4. Skip the friendship round if someone at the table is in a real falling-out.
  5. Keep to situations everyone recognizes and leave the extreme ones out.

Frequently asked questions

What are good what would you do questions?

Everyday situations with no single right answer: a plan that falls apart, walking into a room of strangers, a confusing message from a friend. People answer from experience, and the different reactions make the conversation.

Are what would you do questions good for team building?

Yes, the light ones are. Questions about changed plans and joining a new group show how people work without asking anything personal, which suits a team lunch or a first meeting.

How are these different from would you rather questions?

Would you rather gives two fixed options to pick from. What would you do leaves the answer open, so people describe their own move and usually tell a story to explain it.
