How to use them
Before you ask
A work lunch goes best when the conversation is about anything but work. Shop talk will find its way in on its own; the questions are there to give it some competition. Food is the obvious start, since the menu is right in front of you.
The usual problems are a team lunch that splits into the same two cliques, or a lunch for two that turns into a meeting with sandwiches. One light question asked to the whole table fixes the first. For the second, ask about life off the clock. People who are reserved at their desks often turn out to have strong opinions about leftovers.
One or two questions per lunch is plenty. Let the answers lead, and keep something easy for the walk back, like a small plan they’re looking forward to.
Good for
Tips
- Ask the whole table one question instead of talking only to the person beside you.
- Avoid diet talk and comments on what anyone orders.
- If someone is new, ask them first; the rest will follow.
- Let lunch be lunch. Rushing back says the conversation didn’t matter.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about at a work lunch?
Food, weekends, free time and small plans. Start with the menu, like a go-to order on a tired day or a food that’s better as leftovers, then move to life outside the office.
How do you avoid talking about work at lunch?
Ask a food or weekend question before anyone mentions a project, and answer it yourself. When work comes up, let it run briefly, then follow up on something personal someone mentioned.
What should you not talk about at a work lunch?
Diets, salaries, office gossip, politics and other people’s performance. Keep it light enough that anyone could pull up a chair.
