Game night without board games: a two-hour plan

You invited people over for game night and then remembered you own one dusty deck of cards and a puzzle with pieces missing. Good news: the best game nights need nothing you can’t find in a kitchen drawer.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

In short

The idea

You can run a full game night with paper, pens, a bowl and a timer on your phone. Fishbowl, Telephone Pictionary and Categories are three classics that need nothing else, and a conversation round at the end gives the night somewhere to land.

Below is what to gather, how each game works and a two-hour running order for six to twelve people.

Good for

  • Last-minute game nights
  • Groups of six to twelve
  • Rentals and cabins with no game shelf
  • Mixed ages, teens included

Tips

  1. Count the pens before people arrive.
  2. Start with Categories so late arrivals can join.
  3. Use the same Fishbowl slips for all three rounds.
  4. Put the conversation round last, on the couch.
  5. End while people are still laughing.

Decks for this

What to gather

  • A stack of scrap paper or sticky notes, cut into small slips
  • One pen per person (count them; they vanish)
  • A big bowl, hat or clean salad bowl
  • A timer: any phone will do
  • Somewhere to keep score, if your group likes that

Fishbowl (also called Salad Bowl)

Everyone writes five names on slips: famous people, characters, people everyone in the room knows. Fold them into the bowl and split into two teams. Teams take turns, one minute each, getting their teammates to guess as many slips as possible.

The magic is that the same slips go back in for three rounds. Round one: describe it with any words. Round two: only one word. Round three: act it out, no words. By round three, everyone has inside jokes about the slips, and the room is loud.

Telephone Pictionary

Each person gets a small stack of paper. Write a phrase on the top sheet and pass the stack left. The next person draws the phrase, folds the writing away and passes it on; the next writes what they think the drawing shows; and so on. At the end, everyone reveals their stack from the start. It needs no drawing skill. Bad drawings are better.

Categories by hand

Agree on six categories (a snack, a city, something in a garage, a TV show, a reason to be late, a band). Pick a random letter. Everyone has two minutes to fill in an answer for each category starting with that letter. Answers nobody else wrote score a point. Arguing about whether “Quesadilla Hut” is a real restaurant is part of the game.
