Conversation games for groups that need nothing but people

No board, no buzzer, no app required (though one helps). These are games where talking is the whole point, with notes on group size and how to keep them moving.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

Just for fun№ 29

Finish this: our barkada or family always laughs when ___.

Tapusin yung line: Laging nauuwi sa tawanan kapag ___.

A note

Shared laughter becomes part of a group's language. Sometimes one unfinished sentence is enough to bring everyone back there.

In short

The idea

The simplest conversation games for groups are Hot Seat, Two Truths and a Lie, This or That, and Story Chain: each one gives everyone a turn and a clear reason to talk. Choose by the size of the group and how well people know each other.

Whatever you play, the host’s job is the same: go first, keep turns short, and make it obvious that anyone can pass.

Good for

  • Parties and game nights
  • Youth groups and clubs
  • Team offsites
  • Family reunions with mixed ages

Tips

  1. Choose the game by group size first.
  2. Go first, and keep your turn short.
  3. Say up front that anyone can pass.
  4. After a guessing game, ask one follow-up about the surprising answer.
  5. Stop while people still want one more round.

This or That (for big or new groups)

Call out two options; people move to one side of the room or raise a hand. Beach or mountains. Early bird or night owl. After each round, ask one person from each side to defend their pick in a sentence. It gets everyone moving and gives strangers an instant thing in common.

Two Truths and a Lie

Each person says three things about themselves; the group guesses the lie. The trick to making it a conversation game rather than a quiz: after the reveal, ask one follow-up about the most surprising true thing. That’s where the stories are.

Hot Seat

One person sits in the “hot seat” for three minutes while everyone else asks them questions. They can pass on any two. Rotate until everyone has had a turn. It works best with friends, and with a rule that the first round of questions stays light.

Story Chain and Desert Island

Story Chain: one person starts a story with a single sentence, and each person adds one more. It falls apart in the best way and is great with kids and adults together.

Desert Island: everyone names three things they’d bring to a desert island, then the group votes on who would survive longest. Swap in other scenarios: a road trip, a zombie movie, a cooking show.

Question cards, when you want the conversation to keep going

Most party games run out of steam after a few rounds. Question cards don’t, because each one starts a different conversation. Pass a phone or a deck around: draw, read it aloud, answer, and let anyone jump in with a follow-up. In Kumustahan you can choose light questions for a new group or let it go deeper once people are comfortable.

Questions that work as group games

Real cards from the app. The first set works like This or That; the rest suit Hot Seat or a pass-the-phone round.

    Back of the card

A fake title can be more accurate than a real one. It gives a playful name to the thing people already notice.

5 questions

For a group that already knows each other a little.

  1. Group photo starts. What is your automatic move?

May group photo na. Ano ang automatic move mo?

    Back of the card

Group photos bring out instant instincts. Some people arrange everyone, some disappear behind others, and some are ready before the camera is.

May automatic instinct kapag group photo na. May taga-ayos, may nagtatago sa likod, may ready bago pa yung camera.

  2. In a group hangout, which role do you usually fall into: planner, joker, listener, snack person, or something else?

    Back of the card

Group roles can be funny because they appear before anyone assigns them. Somehow every hangout finds its planner, joker, listener, or snack person.

Minsan lumalabas yung role bago pa may mag-assign. Sa bawat hangout, may planner, joker, listener, o snack person talaga.

  3. In a group, which role feels most natural to you: listener, storyteller, organizer, or side-comment person?

Sa group, anong role yung natural sa'yo: listener, taga-kuwento, organizer, o taga-side comment?

    Back of the card

Group roles can shift, but most of us have a default. It is one way people learn how to read us.

  4. Finish this: our barkada or family always laughs when ___.

Tapusin yung line: Laging nauuwi sa tawanan kapag ___.

    Back of the card

Shared laughter becomes part of a group's language. Sometimes one unfinished sentence is enough to bring everyone back there.

  5. What small thing do you naturally take care of during a hangout?

    Back of the card

Some small things find the same person every time. It can be funny how a group quietly learns who handles what.
