How to use them

Before you ask

This or that is a game of fast choices: someone reads two options, everyone picks one, and the fun is in who picked what. It works because it asks nothing of anyone. There’s no blank to fill and no story to tell, just a side to take.

That makes it the right opener for groups that don’t know each other yet, kids who freeze at open questions, and the car ride where nobody wants to think too hard. The trick is speed. Read the card, count to three, and have everyone say their answer at once. Split votes are the good part: give each side ten seconds to defend itself.

When the group wants more than a quick pick, the menu cards slow it down a little, and the last round turns the same format toward how people are actually doing. For dilemmas with a twist in them, the would you rather questions are the next step.

Good for

  • Car rides and long lines
  • Classrooms and youth groups
  • The first minutes of a party or meeting
  • Kids and adults playing together
  • Group chats that need a poll

Tips

  1. Count down and answer together, so nobody copies the first person.
  2. Keep score of the splits, not the answers. The most divided card wins the round.
  3. Give each side ten seconds to defend its pick, then move on.
  4. Let everyone invent a third option once per game. Someone always will anyway.
  5. Play the slower round last, after everyone has laughed a few times.

Frequently asked questions

What are good this or that questions?

Ones with two real options that split a room, about everyday things like mornings, food, travel seats and chores. The good ones have no right answer, so the fun is in hearing who picked what.

How do you play this or that?

Someone reads two options and everyone picks one at the same time, by saying it, pointing or raising a hand. Ask the two sides for a quick reason, then go to the next card.

What is the difference between this or that and would you rather?

This or that is a quick pick between everyday options; would you rather usually adds a twist or a trade-off and invites a longer defense. Many groups start with this or that and move on once everyone is warmed up.

Can I play this or that on my phone?

Yes. These are cards from Kumustahan, a free conversation card app. Pick the Icebreakers and Just for fun decks, keep it light, and read each card aloud.
