How to use them
Before you ask
Rapid fire works because it removes the pause. When there’s no time to think, people answer with their gut, which is funnier and more honest than a considered reply. The person asking reads quickly, the person answering says the first thing that comes, and nobody explains until the round is over.
Use it as a warm-up for a party or a video call, a hot-seat round at a birthday, or a quick way for a new team to learn a few facts about each other. It also works on a first hangout, as long as you trade turns and the other person grills you too.
Afterward, go back to the one answer that surprised everyone and ask about it. That’s the payoff: a rapid fire round finds the topic, and the slower conversation that follows is where people actually talk.
Good for
Tips
- Set a timer for the whole round, not for each answer.
- The reader sets the pace. No gaps between questions.
- Ban explanations until the round is over.
- Swap the hot seat every round so everyone gets a turn.
- Circle back to the most surprising answer when it’s done.

Frequently asked questions
What are good rapid fire questions?
Short questions with one-word answers: a go-to order, a favorite drink, a dream destination, a quick pick between two options. They’re quick to read, quick to answer and fun to compare.
How do you play rapid fire questions?
One person reads questions as fast as possible while another answers with the first thing that comes to mind. No explaining until the round ends; then talk about the answers that surprised everyone.
How long should a rapid fire round be?
A minute or two per person. Longer rounds lose the speed that makes it fun, so swap the hot seat and start again instead.
