How to use them
Before you ask
Most couples know how to fight. Fewer know how to come back. After an argument the room goes quiet, both of you are waiting for the other to go first, and any question can sound like a trap. These questions are built for that gap: small, warm, and about the two of you rather than the thing you argued about.
Start alone. If you’re still replaying lines in your head, you’re not ready, and that’s fine. Then pick one card from the second set, something easy that says “I’m still here.” Only when both of you feel calm, move to the questions about how you talk. You’re not trying to win the rematch. You’re trying to understand what the other one needed.
Two rules. Either of you can pause at any point, no explanation needed. And none of these questions are for proving a point; if a card starts to feel like ammunition, put it down. This isn’t therapy, and if the same fight keeps coming back, a counselor can help. The Couples Edition has more cards for this.

Tips
- Wait until you can both speak in a normal voice, even if that’s tomorrow.
- Start with one small question about the two of you, not the fight itself.
- Say back what you heard before you explain your side.
- Either of you can pause the talk, and the other agrees without sulking.
- End with something kind, even if nothing is solved yet.
After a fight
Frequently asked questions
What should you ask your partner after a fight?
Ask what would help them feel okay again, what they needed during the argument, and what you can say next time that helps them feel heard. Ask once you’ve both cooled down, and listen without defending.
How do you talk after an argument with your partner?
Give it time first, then start with something small that shows you want to reconnect. Talk about how you each felt and what you needed, one at a time, rather than replaying who said what.
How long should you wait to talk after a fight?
Long enough that both of you are calm, which can be twenty minutes or the next morning. Agree on a time to come back to it so the pause doesn’t feel like being shut out.
What if we keep having the same fight?
A repeating fight usually points to a need neither of you has named yet. Talk about it on a calm day, and if it keeps turning into the same argument, a couples counselor can help you both.
