A note

The shift does not have to be big. A small routine can help both of you arrive, settle, and feel like partners again.

Hindi kailangang malaki yung pag-shift. Minsan small routine lang ang tumutulong sa inyong dumating, kumalma, at maramdaman na partners ulit kayo.

How to use them

Before you ask

Date night questions for parents have one job: get you talking about something other than the kids. Ask how you’d spend a Saturday if money were no object and nobody needed you, which event you’d go to if the ticket were free, or what side of you comes out around close friends. Parenting fills every conversation if you let it.

It happens to almost every couple with young children. You finally get out, sit down, and within five minutes you’re discussing pediatrician appointments and whose turn it is to do bath time. That’s not a failure; it’s simply what’s on your minds. A few ready questions give you a way out without either of you having to be the one who changes the subject.

Agree on a no-kids rule for the first hour, then let it go. Spend the middle on who you each were before kids, and keep the couples questions for dessert. The last group is gentle: one thing that would help you both breathe easier this week.

Good for

  • The first date night after a baby
  • Monthly sitter nights
  • At-home dates after bedtime
  • Parents of toddlers and teenagers alike
  • A weekend away without the kids

Tips

  1. Make a no-kid-talk rule for the first hour. Keep score if you want.
  2. Don’t check the baby monitor app at the table; the sitter will call.
  3. Short is fine. A 90-minute dinner beats a cancelled evening.
  4. Pick a place you went before you had kids.
  5. Plan the next date before you get home.

Date night for parents

Frequently asked questions

What do parents talk about on date night besides the kids?

Daydreams about free time, who you each were before kids, friends and music, and the two of you as partners. Having a few questions ready makes it easy to steer away from parenting talk.

How often should parents have a date night?

Whatever you can actually keep: weekly, every other week or monthly. Consistency matters more than how fancy it is, and a date at home after bedtime counts.

Is it okay to talk about the kids at all?

Of course. The point is not to talk only about them. Try a no-kids rule for the first hour, then relax it.
