Chores, mess and who notices what. Fairness without blame.

  1. At home, who usually notices the chores, mess, or little things first?

    Back of the card

Every home has someone who notices first. That kind of attention can be quiet, but it keeps many things moving.

Sa bawat bahay, may taong unang nakakapansin. Tahimik minsan yung ganung attention, pero marami siyang napapaandar.

  2. What is one chore, errand, or task that feels lighter when we do it as a team?

Anong chore, errand, o task ang gumagaan kapag team tayo?

    Back of the card

  1. What would you like to make more time for this month?

    Back of the card

Fixing what felt off

4 questions

Repairs, permission and apologies. Keep it short and kind.

  1. What quick question could clear up a confusing message from a friend?

    Back of the card

“Did you mean...?” can leave the answer open. You can use an invented message.

Puwedeng magsimula sa “Ang ibig mo bang sabihin...?” Gawa-gawang message lang kung gusto mo.

  2. What small action helps us reconnect after a misunderstanding?

Anong maliit na action ang tumutulong sa atin mag-reconnect after a misunderstanding?

    Back of the card

Reconnecting does not erase what happened. It helps both of you return to the conversation with a little more care.

  3. What should friends ask your permission to do?

    Back of the card

  4. What makes an apology from a friend feel sincere to you?

    Back of the card

Would it still feel sincere if they used different words?

How to use them

Before you ask

A family meeting is a short, regular time when everyone in the house, kids included, gets a say in how home runs. It works when it’s predictable and kind. It fails when it turns into a parent’s list of complaints with an audience.

The fix is structure. Always open with appreciations, so the first thing said is good. Talk about chores as a team problem (who notices the mess first, which task feels lighter together) instead of naming who didn’t do theirs. Plan the week. Only then, briefly, fix what felt off.

Keep it to twenty minutes, same day every week. Sunday evening works for many families: the weekend is winding down and the week ahead is still fixable.

Good for

  • Weekly Sunday family meetings
  • Families starting a chore system
  • Blended families setting house rules
  • Back-to-school week
  • Families with teens who want a say

Tips

  1. Always open with appreciations, even on a bad week.
  2. Rotate the chair so it isn’t always a parent running it.
  3. Write decisions on one sheet on the fridge; review it next week.
  4. Talk about problems, not people: “the dishes pile up,” not “you never…”
  5. End with something fun so kids look forward to the next one.

A 20-minute family meeting agenda

Rotate who chairs the meeting, including kids from about seven. The chair reads the questions and keeps time.

  • Appreciations (5 min): one question from the first group; everyone answers about someone at the table.
  • The house (5 min): one question about chores or space, and one decision you’ll try this week.
  • The week (5 min): calendar, rides, one thing to make time for, one thing to say no to.
  • Repairs (3 min): anything that felt off, said gently. No pile-ons.
  • Finish (2 min): a treat, a game or picking Friday’s dinner.
