Before you ask
A fun Friday question is one light, easy question that closes the work week, answered in a minute at stand-up or in a thread over the afternoon. It works because Friday energy is already different: people are tired, a little looser, and glad to talk about something other than the sprint.
Teams usually overdo it. A forty-minute Friday game turns into one more meeting, and a question that asks people to share their weekend plans puts pressure on whoever is spending it alone or working a second job. Keep it to one question, keep it light, and make sure “nothing much” is a fine answer.
Rotate who picks the question each week so it doesn’t always sound like the manager’s idea. The closing set works for the final meeting of the week: a small win, a single word for the week, the inconvenience you’d delete forever before Monday comes.
Good for
Tips
- One question per Friday. If people want more, they’ll ask.
- Post it in the channel before lunch so the thread has time to grow.
- Let a different person pick the question each week.
- Never turn the answers into a report or a slide.
- Avoid questions that assume a big weekend, a partner or extra money.
Decks for this
Three ways to run it
At the Friday stand-up: add one question after the updates, not before, so it feels like a reward and not a delay. Thirty seconds each.
In the team channel: post the question at lunch and let people answer all afternoon. Remote and part-time colleagues can join whenever they log on, and the thread gives people something to reply to.
As a streak: keep the same question day the whole quarter. A small ritual that people expect works better than a big event nobody asked for.
Fun Friday questions
Frequently asked questions
What are good fun Friday questions for work?
Light questions about small pleasures and free time: the drink that makes a day feel special, how you’d spend a suddenly free afternoon, the funny award you’d give yourself, a single word for the week. Easy to answer in a sentence and safe for any team.
How do you do Fun Friday with a remote team?
Post one question in the team channel around lunch and let people reply through the afternoon, or ask it in the last few minutes of the Friday call. Keep it optional and keep it short.
How long should a Fun Friday question take?
About thirty seconds per person at stand-up, or no meeting time at all if you run it as a chat thread.
