For the one leaving

  1. Name something you are nervous about that still feels worth trying.

    Back of the card

  2. What helped you feel welcome in a new place?

    Back of the card

  3. Tell us about something you used to avoid that feels less scary now.

    Back of the card

Less scary is still movement. You do not have to be fearless to know something has changed.

How to use them

Before you ask

A going-away party is the one chance to say the things friends usually leave unsaid, and questions make it easier than a speech. Ask about the favorite places you shared, the failed plan that became a great memory, the ride home you still talk about. Saying them out loud is the goodbye.

Farewell parties can tilt sad. The trick is to keep most of the night on stories and future plans, not on the leaving. The “staying close” questions are practical: what you could do together online, what kind of message is easy to reply to, what you’d want to do first when you see each other again. They turn goodbye into a plan.

End with the friend who is leaving. Moving is brave and a little scary, so ask what made a new place feel like theirs last time, and which old fears have already shrunk. Everyone in the room gets to remind them they’ve done hard things before.

Good for

  • Farewell parties for friends moving away
  • Coworkers leaving for a new job
  • Students leaving for college
  • Friends moving abroad
  • Military moves and new postings

Tips

  1. Ask guests to write one answer on a card for the friend to open in the new place.
  2. Agree on a first video call date before the party ends.
  3. Keep the sad parts short. Laughing is a better goodbye.
  4. Take one group photo with everyone, then put the phones away.
  5. For staying close afterward, see questions for long-distance friends.

Going-away party

Frequently asked questions

What do you say at a going-away party?

Share a specific memory, tell the friend something they did that mattered, and make a plan to stay in touch. Questions about favorite places and shared stories make it easier than a speech.

How do you stay close to a friend who moves away?

Agree on how you’ll keep in touch: what you can do together online, the kind of messages that are easy to answer, and a date for the first call. Small, regular contact beats rare long calls.

What are good going-away party ideas besides gifts?

A memory round where each guest answers a question about the friendship, a box of handwritten answers to open later, and a map of favorite local places. They mean more than anything bought.
