Tone, apologies and fears about the future, asked gently.
-
What kind of tone from me helps you stay open when the topic is hard?
Anong klaseng tono mula sa akin ang tumutulong sa'yo manatiling open kapag hard ang topic?
Back of the card
Tone can open or close a conversation before the words fully land. Being gentle does not mean being unclear.
Puwedeng magbukas o magsara ang tono bago pa lubos marinig ang sinasabi. Hindi ibig sabihin na unclear kapag gentle.
-
What is one thing I can say during a hard talk that helps you feel heard?

Help lands better when it still respects your partner's choice. Good support helps them feel accompanied, not managed.

What is one fear about our future that you want me to understand gently?
Ano yung isang fear mo tungkol sa future natin na gusto mong maintindihan ko nang dahan-dahan?
Back of the card

Kapag nagbago ang plans, paano mo dini-decide kung ano ang itutuloy, bibitawan, o ia-adjust?
Back of the card
Changed plans show priorities quickly. Sometimes the real answer is comfort, people, responsibility, peace, or simply energy.
Kapag nagbago ang plans, mabilis lumabas ang priorities. Minsan comfort, tao, responsibility, peace, o energy lang talaga.
How to use them
Before you ask
In an intercultural relationship, a lot of conflict is really translation. A tone that sounds warm in one family sounds rude in another; an apology that counts in one culture doesn’t register in the other; “we’ll see” means yes to one of you and no to the other. Questions about how each of you hears things save a lot of arguments.
Start with the playful differences: the food you’ll never agree on, the language you’d each love to wake up fluent in, the holiday you would invent if you could merge your calendars. Then use the middle group to remember why the differences felt small at the start.
The last group is for a calm night. Ask about tone and apologies when you’re not fighting, and about the future when nothing has to be decided yet. If one of you is Filipino, the cards also come in Tagalog, so the question can be read in either partner’s language.
Good for
Tips
- Ask “what did that mean in your family?” before “why did you say that?”
- Take turns choosing whose holiday tradition you try first each year.
- Learn the words your partner uses for love and comfort in their first language.
- Don’t make your partner the spokesperson for their whole culture. Ask about their family, not their country.

Frequently asked questions
What should intercultural couples talk about?
How each of you shows love and apologizes, what your families expect, which traditions you want to keep, and how you would raise kids. Start with playful differences like food and language before the harder topics.
How do intercultural couples handle cultural differences?
By asking instead of assuming: what a gesture or phrase means in the other’s family, and what each partner actually wants. Many couples build a mix of both traditions plus a few of their own.
Are there couples questions in two languages?
Kumustahan’s cards come in English and Filipino, which suits couples where one partner is Filipino. Each of you can read the same question in your own language.
