How to use them
Before you ask
Movie night’s hardest moment is the first twenty minutes, scrolling through options while nobody wants to decide. A question breaks the stalemate: what you’d put on with a friend, which hour would you replay, which day of history you’d rewatch. The answers usually point to a film.
While the snacks are made and the trailers play, ask the if-your-life-were-a-movie questions. Which role you’d play in an adventure story, what your hero name would be, whether you’d rather tour the stars or the deep sea. They’re quick, fun and get everyone in the mood for a story.
Then, when the credits roll, don’t reach for the remote straight away. Ask what made people laugh when they least expected it, or which place has stayed with them like a scene from a film. The talk after a movie is often better than the movie.
Good for
Tips
- Set a timer for choosing. When it rings, the last question’s answer decides.
- Ask the life-as-a-movie questions during the trailers, not the film.
- Let the credits run for one round of questions before anyone checks a phone.
- With kids, ask which character they’d be and why.
- For a night in for two, see date night at home questions.

Frequently asked questions
What do you talk about on movie night?
Use a question to choose the film, quick ones during the snack run and trailers, fun if-your-life-were-a-movie questions, and a round when the credits roll about what stayed with everyone.
How do you choose a movie when nobody can decide?
Ask everyone what they’d pick for a night in with a friend, or which hour they would replay. The answers usually point to a genre, and a timer stops the endless scrolling.
What are fun movie night activities besides the movie?
A short question round before and after, snack debates, and a “cast yourself” game where everyone picks their role in an adventure story.
