How to use them

Before you ask

A Super Bowl party has two audiences: the people watching the game and the people watching the ads, the halftime show and the snack table. The trick is to time your questions to the breaks, so nobody misses a play and everyone has something to talk about in between.

The commercials are the easiest moment. Right after a strange ad, ask everyone to pitch a useless invention they’d still buy, or the future gadget they want most. The room turns into a writers’ meeting for a minute and a half, and the non-fans finally get the floor.

Save the fourth-quarter questions for when the game is close and somebody is pacing. Asking how people react when things go wrong, or how they decide what to drop when plans change, is half joke and half genuinely useful for the fan who needs to breathe.

Good for

  • Super Bowl watch parties at home
  • Big-game parties with mixed fans
  • Office or neighborhood game-day parties
  • Families watching together
  • Friends who only care about the ads

Tips

  1. Only ask during breaks. Nobody forgives a question during a fourth-and-one.
  2. Run the commercial pitches as a contest and vote at halftime.
  3. Give the non-fans the cards to read. It gives them a job.
  4. Keep score of the best answers like the game itself, for laughs.
  5. If the game is a blowout, the questions become the main event. Have extra ready.

Frequently asked questions

What do you talk about at a Super Bowl party if you don’t like football?

The ads, the halftime show and the people in the room. Questions about inventions, music picks and how friends can tell when you’re excited work well during breaks.

What are good Super Bowl party games besides betting?

A commercial-break pitch contest, where each guest pitches a silly product after a strange ad, and a question round at halftime. Both need no money or special supplies.

When should you ask questions at a Super Bowl party?

During the pregame, commercial breaks and halftime. Keep plays sacred, and save the reflective questions for a close fourth quarter or the drive home.
