Before kickoff

Walk-up songs, group photos and the stuff every tailgater always brings.

  1. Would you rather always arrive twenty minutes early or exactly on time?

Mas gusto mo bang laging dumating nang twenty minutes early o laging sakto sa oras?

    Back of the card

  2. Name the song that should play when you enter a room.

    Back of the card

An entrance song is mostly about energy. It says what kind of moment you want everyone to feel.

  3. Group photo starts. What is your automatic move?

May group photo na. Ano ang automatic move mo?

    Back of the card

Group photos bring out instant instincts. Some people arrange everyone, some disappear behind others, and some are ready before the camera is.

May automatic instinct kapag group photo na. May taga-ayos, may nagtatago sa likod, may ready bago pa yung camera.

  4. Name the small thing you always bring, even for a quick errand.

    Back of the card

The thing you always bring has earned its place. It may be small, but it clearly passed the trust test.

Yung lagi mong dala, may reason yan.

  5. What comic-book hero name would fit something you are good at?

  1. You and a friend want different snacks. What would you do?

Magkaiba kayo ng friend mo ng gustong snack. Ano ang gagawin mo?

Dalawa lang: unlimited snacks o perfect sleep for one week. I-defend ang pick mo.

How to use them

Before you ask

Tailgate questions should be loud, quick and a little silly: what song should play when you walk into the stadium, what you always bring, what your mascot would be for today’s mood. A tailgate is a party, and the questions should sound like one.

The challenge is the mix. A tailgate circle usually holds two superfans, a few casual fans and someone’s date who came for the brats. Trivia only works for the superfans. Questions about the people, their habits and their funniest overreactions work for everyone, including the person who still isn’t sure what a down is.

Fan stories are the heart of it. Every fan has a game they overreacted to, a rival friend they somehow made peace with, a loss they can laugh about now. Ask for those, and the time until kickoff disappears.

Good for

  • College football tailgates
  • NFL parking-lot pregames
  • Hockey, baseball and soccer pregames
  • Watch parties in the driveway
  • Mixed groups of fans and non-fans

Tips

  1. Keep the cards in the cooler lid. Everyone opens it eventually.
  2. Ask the non-fans first. Superfans will talk anyway.
  3. Make the walk-up-song question a group vote, then play the winner on the speaker.
  4. Rival fans in the group? The friendship questions are the peace treaty.
  5. Pack it up before you walk in. The game is the main event.

Tailgate

Frequently asked questions

What are fun things to talk about at a tailgate?

Walk-up songs, group photo habits, snack debates and fan stories: the game you overreacted to, the rival friend you made peace with. Quick, funny questions work better than trivia in a mixed group.

How do you include people who aren’t sports fans at a tailgate?

Ask questions about people rather than the game, like what they always bring, which role they play in a group, or what makes a game fun even when nobody wins. Everyone can answer those.

Do these questions work without cell service at the stadium?

Yes. Kumustahan, a free conversation card app, keeps every card on the phone itself, so a packed stadium lot with no signal doesn’t matter.
