How to use them
Before you ask
Aunts and uncles have a special position: close enough to care, far enough not to be in charge. Nieces and nephews often tell an aunt or uncle things they won’t tell their parents, if the aunt or uncle asks the right way.
The right way depends on age. Little kids want you to play: a tiny superpower, a free ticket to anything. Tweens and teens want to be asked about what they’re into, not quizzed on grades or teased about crushes (skip those entirely). Grown nieces and nephews want to be asked what matters to them now, as adults.
The last group is how you become the relative they call first with good news. Ask how they like news to be met, and then meet it that way.
Good for
Tips
- Take them out alone once a year. One-on-one time is when they talk.
- Never ask about grades, weight or dating in front of the family.
- Remember one answer and bring it up next time.
- Be the adult who celebrates loudly when they share good news.
- Don’t report what they tell you back to their parents unless it’s a safety issue.

Frequently asked questions
What should I ask my nieces and nephews?
Match the age. Little kids: a tiny superpower or a free ticket to any event. Teens: what they’d love to watch with a friend or an opinion they take seriously. Grown-ups: what matters to them lately and who they respect.
How can I be closer to my nieces and nephews?
Spend one-on-one time with them, ask about their interests, remember the answers, and react warmly when they share good news. Being reliable matters more than being fun.
What should aunts and uncles avoid asking?
Grades, weight, dating and “when are you going to…” questions, especially in front of other relatives.
