How to use them
Before you ask
Godparents make a promise at a baptism or christening, and then life happens: a move, busy years, a godchild who grows up seeing them twice a year. Questions for godparents are a way to keep that promise in an ordinary, unpressured way, by actually knowing the child.
Start with fun. A godchild of seven wants to tell you which animal they’d like to understand, not their catechism. The faith questions come once there’s trust, and they work best as stories: a Bible story they remember easily, someone who helps them know Jesus, a prayer that was answered in a small way. Share your own answer each time.
For older godchildren, the questions shift toward courage and choices, and a godparent can be the adult outside the house who listens. In many families, a ninong or ninang plays exactly that role.
Good for
Tips
- Celebrate their baptism anniversary with a call and one question.
- Lead with fun; faith questions come after trust.
- Answer every faith question yourself, honestly.
- Never quiz; ask what they remember, not what they know.
- Stay in touch through the teen years, when an outside adult matters most.

Frequently asked questions
What questions should a godparent ask a godchild?
Start with fun ones, like which animal they’d understand or a fake job title that fits them. Later ask about a Bible story they remember, someone whose faith encourages them, and what takes courage for them to do.
How can I be a good godparent?
Show up regularly, get to know the child as a person, share your own faith through stories rather than lessons, and stay in touch as they grow up.
Do these work for non-religious godparents?
The first group works for anyone. The faith questions come from the Lifegroup & Faith deck and are Christian; skip them if they don’t fit your family.
