How to use them
Before you ask
Worship teams spend hours together and still rarely talk. Rehearsal is chords, transitions and the click track; Sunday is soundcheck and service. A few minutes of questions before rehearsal turns a group of musicians into a team that worships together, not just one that plays together.
Start with music: a worship song that stayed with them lately, a song that takes them back to a particular time. Then talk about serving. Teams that lead every week are at real risk of burnout, and a question about what to stop saying yes to is permission people need to hear. When serving has stretched someone’s patience, better to say so on Thursday than during the Sunday run-through.
The third group is about each person’s own walk with God, which can get lost behind leading others. Close with team life: how you make things right with a quiet bandmate after a tense rehearsal, who on the team you can sit with in silence.
Good for
Tips
- Keep it to ten minutes before rehearsal and protect practice time.
- Include the tech and production team, not only the people on stage.
- Ask the burnout questions every few months, and actually adjust the schedule.
- Pray over one person’s answer before you start playing.
