Conversation cards at a wedding, for the table of strangers
Every wedding has a table where the groom’s college roommate sits next to the bride’s great-aunt. A few good questions by the place cards can turn that table into the fun one.
Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.
Tell us about a friend who made you feel like you belonged.
Ikuwento yung friend na nagparamdam sa'yo na belong ka.
Inclusion can happen through one seat saved, one question asked, or one person making room on purpose.
Minsan isang upuang tinabi, isang tanong, o isang taong sinadyang magtabi ng space ang nagpaparamdam na kasama ka.
In short
The idea
Conversation cards at a wedding reception give guests who don’t know each other something to talk about between courses. Put three to five cards on each table, choose light questions that work for every age, and add a few about friendship and love that tie back to the couple.
Here’s how couples and planners use them, from the reception tables to the rehearsal dinner, plus what to leave out.
Good for
Tips
- Put three to five cards per table, near the centerpiece.
- Add a line telling guests what to do with them.
- Include one or two questions about the couple.
- Skip exes, “who’s next” and drinking dares.
- Try question cards as a guest book.
Decks for this
On the reception tables
Print a small set per table, tied with ribbon or tucked into a card stand by the centerpiece. A line at the top, like “Ask the person on your left,” tells guests what to do. The window between sitting down and the first course is when tables are quietest, so that’s when the cards get used most.
Keep them light. A wedding table can span three generations and four friend groups; questions about food, travel, small preferences and good memories work for all of them.
A few about the couple
Add one or two cards that point at the couple: “How do you know them?” or “What’s a story about one of them you could tell at this table?” Guests from different sides of the family learn something, and you sometimes hear the story in the toasts later.
At the rehearsal dinner
The rehearsal dinner is smaller and usually mixes two families meeting properly for the first time. A round of questions over dessert, about family habits, who taught you what and the hopes everyone has for the couple, can do more for the in-laws than any seating chart.
A guest-book twist
Instead of a blank guest book, put a card at each place with a question and a line to write on: a piece of advice, a wish for the couple’s first year, a favorite memory of one of them. Collect them in a box at the end. Couples tend to keep these far longer than a signed book.
What to leave out
- Anything about exes, past relationships or “who’s next to get married”.
- Drinking dares and party-game questions (save them for the bachelor or bachelorette).
- Deep personal questions; it’s a celebration, not a retreat.
- Too many cards. Three to five per table is plenty.
