Conversation cards for youth ministry: from laughs to real talk
You have twenty teenagers, forty minutes and a lesson to get through. A few good questions at the start of small group can be the difference between silence and the best conversation of the month.
Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.
Tell us about a recent time serving felt joyful.
Kuwento ng recent time na masaya mag-serve.
Joy in serving is worth noticing. It can show where love is becoming more than duty.
Pansinin kapag may joy sa pag-serve. Minsan doon mo nakikita na yung love, hindi lang duty.
In short
The idea
In youth ministry, conversation cards work best in a set order: a fun question everyone answers, a light faith question, then one deeper question for groups that are ready. The leader answers first, honestly and briefly, and anyone can pass.
This is for youth pastors, small group leaders and volunteers with middle or high school students. For adult small groups, see how to lead a small group discussion.
Good for
Tips
- Always start with a fun question everyone answers.
- Answer first, honestly and briefly.
- Keep groups small and keep the same leaders all semester.
- Give the joker a job.
- Explain confidentiality and its limits at the start.
Decks for this
Fun first, faith second
Teenagers won’t open up about prayer before they’ve laughed together. Start small group with a silly question everyone can answer: a fake job title, the song that should play when you walk in. Then a light faith question that doesn’t require Bible knowledge. Save the deeper question for the last ten minutes, and only for groups that have built some trust.
Leaders answer first
Students will match the honesty you show. If you answer a faith question with a polished, Sunday-school answer, they’ll do the same. If you say “Honestly, prayer has felt kind of dry for me lately,” you’ve given them permission to be real. Keep it brief, and keep it appropriate; you’re modeling, not unloading.
Small groups make it work
Questions that get silence in a room of forty can flow in a circle of six. Split by grade, and by gender for older groups if that’s your practice. Keep the same leaders with the same group across a semester; trust takes weeks.
The kid who jokes about everything
Every group has one. Don’t fight it during the fun question; enjoy it. When you move to the faith question, give them a job (reading the card, choosing who goes next) and come back to them by name with a gentle “What about you, really?” Many jokers are the ones who most want to be asked.
Keep it safe
- Passing is always okay. Say it at the start of every session.
- Confidentiality, with limits. Tell students what’s shared stays in the group, except when someone might be in danger; follow your church’s safeguarding and reporting policy.
- No pressure to pray aloud or to share testimonies.
- Phones away during small group, except the one with the cards.
