In short

The idea

To keep a conversation going, listen for the extra details people mention without being asked, and pick one to ask about. Almost every answer contains two or three of these threads. If someone says they spent Saturday driving their niece to a swim meet in Fresno, you now have a niece, swimming and Fresno to choose from.

The other half is giving the other person threads too. If you only ask questions, they do all the work. Share a small statement of your own after each answer, and the conversation starts to carry itself.

Tips

  1. Ask about the detail they added without being asked.
  2. After each answer, share a short piece of your own.
  3. Bring back an earlier detail later in the conversation.
  4. Bridge to a new topic with “speaking of…” rather than jumping.
  5. End it warmly before it fizzles.

Every answer has threads in it

People rarely answer a question with only the answer. They add a place, a person, a feeling, a complaint. These extras are the most useful part, because the other person chose to mention them. Pick the one that sounds most alive and ask about that instead of moving to your next planned question.

If you miss a thread, you can come back to it later. “You mentioned your niece swims. Is she any good?” is a perfectly natural way to restart a conversation that went quiet.

Trade statements, not only questions

Conversations that feel like interviews die because one person has no room to ask anything back. After they answer, offer something of yours: a related experience, an opinion, a small confession. A statement gives them a thread to pull, and most people will.

A rough rhythm that works: question, answer, your short story, their question, and so on. You don’t need to keep score; just notice if you’ve asked three questions in a row without telling them anything about yourself.

Use callbacks

A callback is when you bring back something from earlier: a joke, a name, a detail. It makes the conversation feel like it has a shape instead of a list of topics, and it shows you were listening. “So would your swim-meet niece approve of this?” about a plate of fries is silly, and it works.

How to change topics without a jolt

When a thread runs out, bridge to the next topic instead of jumping. Three easy bridges:

  • Link it: “Speaking of long drives, have you done any road trips this year?”
  • Use what’s around you: the food, the music, the view, the event you’re both at.
  • Ask permission to go sideways: “Random question, but…” buys you a lot of freedom.

If you’re at a table with more than two people and the talk keeps fading, let the questions come from somewhere outside the group. A deck of conversation cards means no one person has to keep inventing topics.

Know when to let it end

Not every conversation should keep going. If answers are getting shorter and the other person is glancing around, end it warmly before it fizzles: “I’m going to grab another drink, but I want to hear how the swim meet goes.” A good ending is part of a good conversation, and it makes the next one easier to start.

Small answers with a story attached

5 questions

Quick to answer, and there’s almost always a “wait, why?” after.

  1. Share one personal rule that only you seem to understand.

    Back of the card

Personal rules can sound strange from the outside. From the inside, they usually have a very clear origin story.

  2. What line do your friends often hear you say?

    Back of the card

Imagine your usual line printed on a shirt.

  3. Name a topic your family or friends can discuss forever.

    Back of the card

Every group has a topic that refuses to end. It keeps coming back because everyone has one more detail to add.

  4. Share the origin of an inside joke that is okay to explain.

    Back of the card

Tell only the part you have permission to share. The rest can stay an inside joke.

  5. Tell us a food combo you like that people might question.

    Back of the card

Questionable does not always mean wrong. Some pairings just need one brave person to admit they work.

How to keep a conversation going

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep a conversation going?

Pick up one of the extra details the other person mentions and ask about it, then share a little about yourself so they have something to ask back. Bring earlier details back later to give the conversation a shape.

What do you do when you run out of things to say?

Go back to something they said earlier, comment on what’s around you, or ask a light “random question” to change topics. A short pause is normal and not a sign that it’s over.

How do you keep a conversation going over text?

End your messages with something to reply to: a question, a photo, a small opinion. See our guide to starting a conversation over text.
