How to start a conversation over text that gets a reply

“Hey” sits there. “How are you?” gets “good u?” Here’s how to send a first text that someone actually wants to answer, whether it’s an old friend, a new one or a quiet group chat.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

In short

The idea

To start a conversation over text, send something specific and easy to answer: a photo with a question, a memory you share, or a small opinion you want theirs on. “Saw this taco truck and thought of you. Still the best one in town?” gets a reply; “hey” gets a shrug.

This page is about friends, family and new acquaintances. For dating and the talking stage, see talking stage tips.

Good for

  • Texting an old friend
  • Reviving a group chat
  • Keeping in touch with family far away
  • A new friend after you first meet

Tips

  1. Never open with just “hey”.
  2. Say why you thought of them, then ask one specific thing.
  3. Send a photo with a question.
  4. Tell them they don’t need to reply.
  5. Close the thread warmly instead of letting it trail off.

Decks for this

Why “hey” doesn’t work

“Hey” puts all the work on the other person: they have to figure out why you’re texting and come up with a topic. “How are you?” is slightly better but invites the automatic answer. A good first text does the work for them. It tells them why you thought of them and gives them something specific to say back.

Five kinds of texts that get replies

  • A photo and a question: the restaurant you used to go to, a dog that looks like theirs.
  • A shared memory: “Just drove past our old school. Do you remember the vending machine that ate everyone’s money?”
  • A small opinion poll: “Settle a debate: is cereal a soup?”
  • Asking for a recommendation: a show, a recipe, a place to eat in their city.
  • A follow-up on something they told you: “How did the interview go?”

Make it easy to ignore, too

When you text someone you haven’t talked to in a while, they might feel guilty about the gap. Take the pressure off: “No need to reply, just thinking of you” often gets a warmer reply than a question. And don’t follow up a day later with “??”. Some people reply in a week, and that’s okay.

Voice notes and pacing

Once a chat gets going, voice notes can carry a real catch-up better than a wall of text. Keep them under two minutes. Match the other person’s pace: if they reply once a day, a stream of ten messages an hour will feel like a lot.

Reviving a quiet group chat

A dead group chat needs a question everyone can answer quickly. A photo from an old trip with “What would we do if we did this again?” or a simple poll usually works. Or try a question a week: one person posts a light question every Monday and everyone answers when they can.

End threads kindly

Texts don’t need to go on forever. A warm close (“Okay, going to bed. So good to hear from you”) is better than letting the thread trail off unanswered, and it makes the next text easier to send.

To open a quiet chat

5 questions

About messages and keeping in touch.

  1. Choose a short message you could send a friend you have not talked to lately.

    Back of the card

The first message does not need to contain the whole catch-up.

  2. What simple invitation could brighten a friend's ordinary day?

    Back of the card

Keep the invitation short enough to send as one message.

  3. What kind of message from a friend is easy for you to reply to?

    Back of the card

You could write an example with no names or real chat details.

  4. After a tiring day, would you rather get a funny message, a call, or a quiet hangout?

    Back of the card

Choose the first five minutes: a little catching up, a little laughter, or no talking yet.

Piliin ang unang limang minuto: kumustahan, tawanan, o wala munang usapan.

  5. What do you usually send in the group chat: updates, memes, reactions, or something else?

    Back of the card

If your messages had a signature, what would it be: an emoji, a phrase, or something else?

Easy to answer in one message

    Back of the card

5 questions

Better as a voice note or a call.

  1. If you and a friend talk less often, what would you want to ask them?

    Back of the card

Would you ask now or wait for a quieter time to talk?

  2. Picture meeting an old friend after a few years. What would you want to do together first?

    Back of the card

You could begin with the most ordinary thing you used to do together.

  3. What could you and a faraway friend enjoy doing together online?

    Back of the card

Choose a little ritual to start it: the same greeting, the same song, or your own idea.

Puwedeng may nakasanayan kayong panimula: parehong bati, parehong kanta, o sarili ninyong ideya.

  4. How would you like a friend to respond when you are too tired to join a plan?

    Back of the card

Missing one plan does not mean you want to stop being invited.

  5. Name one small hope that helps you keep going.

    Back of the card

A small hope can still carry real strength. It may be quiet, but it is not nothing.
