Long-distance friendship tips for friends who moved away

Your best friend moved across the country, or across an ocean. The friendship doesn’t have to fade into birthday texts. It just needs a little structure.

Kumustahan is a bilingual conversation card app: 1,200 questions in English and Filipino across 7 decks, with a short reflection on the back of every card.

Barkada№ 57

In short

The idea

Long-distance friendships survive on a rhythm, not on effort alone: a standing call you both protect, small low-effort contact in between, and something to look forward to, like a visit or a shared activity. Without that structure, good intentions tend to lose to busy weeks.

Below is what works for friends in different cities, time zones and life stages.

Good for

  • Friends in different cities
  • Friends across time zones
  • College friends after graduation
  • A best friend who moved abroad

Tips

  1. Put a repeating call in both calendars.
  2. Send a voice note or a photo between calls.
  3. Do something together on video, not just talk.
  4. Take turns with the inconvenient time slot.
  5. Plan the next visit before the current one ends.

Decks for this

Set a standing call

“We should talk soon” rarely happens. “First Sunday of the month, 7pm your time” does. Put it in both calendars as a repeating event. If you have to move it, reschedule on the spot instead of canceling. Even a twenty-minute call on a regular rhythm beats a three-hour call twice a year.

Small contact counts

Between calls, keep a thread going with things that take a minute:

  • A voice note on your walk to work.
  • A photo of something that reminded you of them.
  • A meme or song with a one-line comment.
  • A postcard or a letter: rare enough now to feel like a gift.
  • A shared note on your phones for “things to tell you next call”.

Do things together from far away

Conversation is easier when you’re doing something side by side, even on a screen. Watch the same movie with a call open. Cook the same recipe on video. Play an online game. Read the same book and talk about it monthly. Or deal conversation cards over a video call; it gives the call shape when you don’t know what to talk about.

Work with the time difference

Find your overlap window: your morning coffee and their evening, or your lunch break and their late night. Agree on whose “inconvenient” slot you use and take turns. If the gap is big, lean on asynchronous contact, like voice notes and long messages, and save live calls for weekends.

Adjust for life seasons

A new baby, a demanding job or a hard year can make one friend go quiet. It doesn’t have to mean the friendship is ending. Say it out loud: “I’m going to be bad at replying for a while, but I still want to hear from you.” Adjust the rhythm instead of dropping it.

Always have a next visit

Plan the next visit before the current one ends, even roughly (“Next summer, I come to you”). Having something on the calendar keeps the friendship pointed forward and makes the gaps between calls easier.
