How to use them

Before you ask

A dead group chat comes back with one easy question, not a long “we should catch up!!” message that everyone hearts and nobody answers. The trick is making a reply effortless: a one-word answer, a photo, a poll.

Photo prompts work best because they take three seconds. Ask for a picture of the thing they always bring, or the item they always seem to lose, and the chat fills with phones, keys and suspicious chargers. Polls come next. Two options, a strong opinion, and suddenly three people are defending breakfast.

Once people are replying, follow up with something warmer, like a compliment that made them smile lately. Then use the momentum to propose a real plan. That’s what a revived group chat is for.

Good for

  • Friend group chats that went quiet
  • Family threads
  • Class and club chats
  • Team chats that are a little too formal
  • Old roommates and travel buddies

Tips

  1. Send one question, not three. Choice paralysis is real in a group chat.
  2. Put your own answer in the same message so nobody goes first alone.
  3. Use the app’s poll feature for the pick-one questions.
  4. Post in the evening, when people are scrolling, not in the middle of the workday.
  5. When the chat wakes up, suggest a date to meet in person.

Group chat

Frequently asked questions

What should I ask in a group chat?

Something easy to answer in one word or one photo: a pick-one poll, a request for a picture of the item they always lose, a silly what-if. Answer it yourself in the same message.

How do you revive a dead group chat?

Send one low-effort question with your own answer attached, ideally a photo prompt or a poll. Reply to the answers, then suggest a plan while people are active.

What are fun group chat questions?

Polls between two strong options, a tiny superpower, an invented ice cream flavor, or which animal they’d be for a day. Short, silly and easy to reply to.
