How to use them
Before you ask
A Bible study icebreaker has one job: get every voice in the room heard once before the reading starts. People who speak in the first ten minutes are far more likely to speak during the discussion, and people who don’t often stay quiet all night.
So keep it easy. A faith opener, like a normal moment this week when someone noticed God, works for a new believer and a pastor alike. When the group is worn out, go lighter: a topic their family can discuss forever gets laughs and still connects people. Then one question that ties the week to faith, such as a single word for their walk with God, and you’re ready to open the passage.
The last set is a bridge. Ask what they want to be more honest with God about, and the reading that follows lands differently.
Good for
Tips
- Go around once, quickly. The icebreaker is not the discussion.
- On a first night, use a just-for-fun question and save faith openers for week two.
- One-word answers are fine.
- Choose a bridge question that fits the passage you’re about to read.
