How to use them

Before you ask

The best questions to ask when you’re bored are silly, quick and a little bit revealing: the mascot of your current mood, the item you always lose, the comic-book hero name for something you’re good at.

Boredom with another person is usually two people scrolling next to each other, each a little more bored than before. It only takes one question to break it. Light, absurd ones work best, because nobody bored wants homework. They also lead to the best stories: someone defends their animal choice, someone digs out an embarrassing photo, and suddenly the afternoon has a plot.

Take turns reading. If one card gets a big reaction, stay on it and ask why. Boredom is the best time to let a conversation wander.

Good for

  • Slow afternoons with friends
  • Waiting rooms and delayed flights
  • Rainy weekends with siblings
  • Couples on a lazy Sunday
  • Group chats that have gone quiet

Tips

  1. Make it a game: everyone answers, the group votes for the best answer.
  2. Ask “why?” at least once per card; that’s where the stories are.
  3. Put the phones down after you’ve read the card.
  4. Text a card to a friend who’s also bored. It works over chat too.
  5. Stop when it stops being fun.
