How to use them

Before you ask

A cabin weekend is one of the few times a group has nowhere to be and nothing to scroll, which makes it the best setting for conversation there is. The questions just need to match the hour: playful on arrival, nostalgic by the fire, silly when it rains, honest on the last night.

The first evening sets the tone. Everyone arrives tired from the drive, claims rooms and argues about the thermostat. A few light questions about what makes a room feel welcoming, or which chore should do itself, turn the unpacking into the start of the trip.

By the last night, people have relaxed in a way they rarely do at home. Ask where they feel they don’t have to adjust themselves, or who they wish they could spend more ordinary time with. Cabins have a way of making those answers easy.

Good for

  • Cabin rentals with friends
  • Family weekends in the mountains
  • Couples’ trips with other couples
  • Ski weekends and winter getaways
  • Friend reunions far from the city

Tips

  1. Agree on one phone-free evening before you arrive.
  2. Keep a deck by the fireplace; it gets picked up more than the board games.
  3. Assign the question-reader role to whoever is cooking that night.
  4. Save the last-night questions for the last night. The trip needs time to work.
  5. For the fire pit outside, see the campfire questions.

Cabin weekend

Frequently asked questions

What do you talk about on a cabin weekend with friends?

Light questions about rooms and routines on arrival, nostalgic ones about old friends and traditions by the fireplace, silly ones on a rainy afternoon, and a few honest questions on the last night.

What can you do at a cabin when it rains?

Play a question game: funny awards, harmless habits, strange personal rules. It needs no board and works for any number of people, and it fills an afternoon better than another movie.

What’s a good last-night activity for a cabin trip?

Turn the lights down, sit around the fire and go around once or twice with a few honest questions. Let anyone pass. The last night of a trip is when people say the things they’ve been thinking all weekend.
