How to use them
Before you ask
Family vacations go sideways when everyone has a different picture of the trip. One kid wants every hour planned, another wants to do nothing, and a parent wants to arrive at the airport three hours early. Asking a few questions before you book saves a lot of arguing at the gate.
On the trip, questions help kids notice where they are instead of waiting for the next screen. The “plan goes wrong” question is worth asking on day one: when the beach is rained out, you’ll already know who wants a backup plan and who wants a nap.
Save the last group for the drive or flight home. Asking which place left a feeling they’ll keep, and which failed plan turned into a good memory, is how a trip becomes a family story.
Good for
Tips
- Ask the planning questions before you book, not after.
- Let each kid pick one activity for the trip based on their answers.
- Keep a trip notebook and write one answer per day.
- Expect a plan to fail; ask the “what do you do first” question early.
- Look at the photos together a week later and ask again.

Frequently asked questions
What questions should we ask on a family vacation?
Ask what everyone notices first in a new place, what makes a restaurant worth visiting again, what to do when a plan goes wrong, and on the way home, which place left a memory they’ll keep.
How do we plan a family vacation everyone enjoys?
Ask each person whether they prefer a full plan or surprises, one long trip or several short ones, and what they’d choose to do on a free afternoon. Then build the trip so each person gets their answer at least once.
Do these work on a plane?
Yes. Kumustahan is a conversation card app that works offline, so the cards still flip in airplane mode.
