How to use them
Before you ask
The car is one of the easiest places to talk with kids: nobody can leave, nobody has to make eye contact, and there’s a natural end point. Car ride questions just need to work without the driver looking at a card, so these are short enough to read once and remember.
For the school run and errands, use the quick ones; you’ll get two or three answers before you park. On a road trip, the inventions and dream-trip questions can fill half an hour, especially if siblings start building on each other’s answers.
The usual trap is the back-seat fight that starts when one kid answers for the other. Name whose turn it is, and give the youngest the first pick.
Good for
Tips
- The front passenger, or an older kid, reads the card so the driver never has to.
- Name whose turn it is to stop siblings answering for each other.
- Keep a running list on a phone of the best dream-trip answers.
- Use the questions instead of screens for the first twenty minutes of a long drive.
- Stop when the car goes quiet on its own. Quiet in the car is fine.

Frequently asked questions
What are good questions to ask kids in the car?
Short, picture-able ones the driver can ask from memory: a new way to travel without wheels, the first place they’d go with a free ticket, a useless invention they’d still buy. Save longer ones for highway stretches.
How do I keep kids entertained on a road trip without screens?
Alternate question rounds with music and snacks. Imaginative questions like inventions and dream trips can run for a long time when siblings build on each other’s answers.
Are these good for carpools?
Yes. They don’t ask about home or family, so other people’s kids can answer them comfortably.
