How to use them
Before you ask
Food questions are the easiest conversation starters there are, because every single person has an answer and most have a strong one. Ask someone what they order when they’re too tired to think, and you learn about their comfort, their week and their neighborhood in one reply.
Start with opinions, which are quick and get the table arguing happily. Food memories come next: the meal that became a good memory, the after-school snack that felt special, and whether a good hangout is really about the food at all. The last round is a set of food debates and would you rathers for when the group wants to take sides.
Food questions are made for dinner, obviously, but they also work on dates, at work lunches and with kids, who hold very firm views on snacks. Ask a follow-up about where, when or with whom, and a food answer becomes a story.
