What each of you needs when the other shares a worry.

  1. When you share a worry with me, what do you usually need first: comfort, understanding, or ideas?

Kapag nag-share ka ng worry sa akin, ano ang usually kailangan mo muna: comfort, understanding, o ideas?

    Back of the card

How to use them

Before you ask

Mother-son conversations often happen in motion: in the car, while cooking, carrying groceries in. Sons, especially teens, tend to open up when the conversation is a side effect of doing something together. These questions are short enough to ask between turns.

The middle groups go both ways. Ask your son about the first time he did something on his own, and tell him about yours. Ask what he needs first when he shares a worry (comfort, understanding or ideas), and tell him what you need. Moms are often surprised to hear their son wants comfort before solutions too.

With grown sons, the last group lands well at a holiday or a birthday: what change he hopes people have noticed in him, who he respects for how they live.

Good for

  • Drives to school and practice
  • Cooking together
  • Mother-son dates
  • Grown sons home for the holidays
  • Weekly calls with a son who moved away

Tips

  1. Ask in the car; sons talk more without eye contact.
  2. Tell your own version of every story question.
  3. Ask what he needs first, then give exactly that.
  4. Don’t save hard topics for when he’s about to leave.
  5. Keep a ritual: the same drive-through, the same walk.

How can a mom connect with her teenage son?

Talk while doing something together, ask one specific question at a time, and learn how he prefers to be supported. Let him choose when to go deeper.

Do these work with a grown son?

Yes. Grown sons often enjoy the story questions most, and the “how we talk best” group can reset an old pattern between you.
