How to use them

Before you ask

Good Sunday school questions are short, concrete and connected to a kid’s week, like a Bible story they remember or a kindness someone showed them. Children answer “What did Jesus do?” with the answer they think you want. Ask them who helps them know Jesus, though, and they name a real person, which is where a real conversation starts.

The hardest part of Sunday school is often the first ten minutes, when families arrive at different times and the lesson can’t start yet. A silly warm-up fills that gap and lets latecomers join without missing anything. Save the faith questions for after the Bible story, when the kids have something to connect them to.

Read each question aloud for younger children and give a simple example answer of your own. For a mixed-age room, let the older kids answer second so the little ones don’t feel outdone.

Good for

  • Sunday school classes
  • Children’s church
  • Vacation Bible School small groups
  • Midweek kids’ programs
  • Christian homeschool co-ops

Tips

  1. Give your own simple answer first so kids know what an answer sounds like.
  2. Accept short answers. A child who says “my grandma” has said a lot.
  3. Never ask a child to share a prayer request in front of everyone. Let them whisper it to you instead.
  4. Repeat the warm-up as each new family arrives so latecomers feel welcome.
  5. Tell parents at pickup one kind answer their child gave.

Where the questions fit in a Sunday school hour

  • Arrival (5–10 minutes): a warm-up question for whoever is there, repeated as new kids walk in.
  • After the story (5 minutes): one or two faith questions, tied to the lesson.
  • Craft or snack time: a thankful-and-kind question while hands are busy.
  • Prayer time: one gentle question, then pray for what the kids shared.

What questions can you ask kids in Sunday school?

How do you get kids to talk in Sunday school?

Begin with a fun question everyone can answer, give a simple example answer of your own, and accept short replies. Kids talk more during crafts and snacks than when they’re sitting in a circle.
