How to use them
Before you ask
The things to talk about that never run out are the ones everybody lives: food, free time, everyday habits, the people around us and what’s coming up. You don’t need a clever topic. You need a familiar one and a question that opens it from a fresh angle.
Think of each group as a drawer. When a conversation stalls, open one: ask where they like to eat and why, what they’d see if a ticket were free, or which item always goes missing at home. Each answer gives you two or three things to follow, and the topic does the rest.
Rotate between drawers instead of staying in one. Food leads naturally to people (who do you eat with?), people lead to plans, and plans lead back to free time. If you’re worried about the pause itself, the guide to awkward silences helps.
Good for
Tips
- Memorize the five topics, not the questions.
- Follow one detail from each answer before switching drawers.
- Move from food to people to plans; they connect naturally.
- Answer your own question if they hand it back.
- A pause is fine. Pick a drawer and try again.

Frequently asked questions
What are good things to talk about?
Food and favorite places to eat, free time and hobbies, everyday habits, the people in your lives and upcoming plans. These topics are familiar to everyone, so they never run dry.
What can I talk about when I run out of things to say?
Switch to a new topic with a specific question, like where they like to eat or what event they’d go to if the ticket were free. A specific question restarts a conversation faster than a general one.
What are things to talk about over text?
Light topics with short answers work best over text, like food opinions, weekend plans or a show to watch. Save the longer stories for a call.
