How to use them
Before you ask
Values questions ask what matters to someone, and the trick is to ask it sideways. “What are your values?” gets a list of nice words. Asking which small kindness they notice right away, or what they’d mention first if a friend asked what matters lately, gets the real answer, because it comes with an example.
That makes this page useful in a few places: friends who want to understand each other better, couples talking about how they want to live, a classroom or youth group discussing character without a lecture, a team trying to name how it wants to work. Start with the playful round, where a harmless pet peeve turns out to say something about respect.
Listen for the stories behind answers. When someone describes a time a person was fair to them, that’s a value they learned, not one they read. Ask where it came from.
Good for
Tips
- Ask for an example every time someone names a value.
- Start with the playful round; it lowers the stakes.
- Don’t grade answers. There are no wrong values in this game.
- Ask where a value came from. There’s usually a person behind it.
- Notice values you share, and say so.
Values questions
Frequently asked questions
What are good questions to ask about values?
Questions that ask for an example instead of a definition: which kindness you notice first, how you decide what to drop when plans change, what makes an apology feel sincere. The examples show the value.
How do you find out what someone values?
Ask about their choices and the people they respect, then ask why. What someone admires in others and what they protect when time is short are reliable signs.
Can I use these values questions with students?
Yes. The first two groups work well for a classroom or youth group discussion, since they ask for everyday examples rather than anything private.
