A note

Nerves and courage often show up together. The fear does not automatically mean the step is wrong.

The questions

18 questions for the DTR talk

Some cards come from the Couples deck and use “us” and “we”, which is rather the point of this conversation.

How it already feels

5 questions

Warm-ups that check the temperature without asking directly.

  1. When we spend a day together, what moment feels most special between us?

    Back of the card

Couples often build closeness through repeated little moments. Naming them helps you notice and protect what feels good between you.

  2. When do you feel most at ease, or comfortable with me?

Kailan ka pinaka-komportable at magaan kapag kasama mo ako?

    Back of the card

Ease is worth noticing too. It shows what already helps the relationship breathe without trying too hard.

  3. When joining friends for an activity, what helps you feel included?

    Back of the card

Being invited and being able to join are not always the same thing.

  4. When we were still getting to know each other, what moment first made you feel like we could become something real?

Noong kinikilala pa natin ang isa't isa, anong moment yung unang nagparamdam sa'yo na puwede tayong maging something real?

    Back of the card

This is not about pressure or measuring the relationship. It is simply remembering when being together first started to feel possible.

  5. For a free weekend, would you prefer a full plan or a surprise?

    Back of the card

Choose a detail that must stay on your weekend plan, even if everything else is a surprise.

Saying what you want

5 questions

The brave part. Go first if you can.

  1. Say one brave thing you can admit you want.

    Back of the card

Wanting can feel risky when the answer is not guaranteed. Naming the desire is already a brave kind of honesty.

  2. Name something you are nervous about that still feels worth trying.

    Back of the card

Nerves and courage often show up together. The fear does not automatically mean the step is wrong.

  3. Which fear gets smaller when you talk about it?

Anong takot ang gumagaan kapag naikukwento mo?

    Back of the card

Some fears grow in silence and shrink in safe air. Talking can help you see their true size.

  4. If a friend asked what matters to you lately, what is the first thing you would mention?

    Back of the card

You do not have to list everything. Starting with one honest thing is already enough for a real answer.

  5. Share something you wish people understood about your life lately.

    Back of the card

You can keep this general or pass. Which part of your day would help someone understand your answer?

What being together would look like

4 questions

Messages, consistency and the next plan.

  1. What kind of message from me makes you feel close to me when we are apart?

    Back of the card

Distance does not always need constant contact. Sometimes one thoughtful message can help you feel connected again.

  2. What kind of consistency from me helps you feel more secure in us?

    Back of the card

Trust often grows through patterns, not one big moment. Naming the pattern helps your partner know what steadiness feels like to you.

  3. What future plan feels exciting and realistic for us right now?

    Back of the card

Future talk does not have to feel pressuring. Hope can feel steadier when it has a real-life shape.

Hindi kailangang may pressure ang future talk. Mas steady ang hope kapag may real-life shape siya.

  4. When is it easiest for you to have a serious conversation with me?

    Back of the card

Good timing does not make hard topics disappear. It just helps both people stay calmer, clearer, and more present.

How you’d handle the hard parts

4 questions

Not to solve now, just to hear.

  1. What kind of tone from me helps you stay open when the topic is hard?

    Back of the card

Tone can open or close a conversation before the words fully land. Being gentle does not mean being unclear.

Puwedeng magbukas o magsara ang tono bago pa lubos marinig ang sinasabi. Hindi ibig sabihin na unclear kapag gentle.

  2. How would you want a friend to tell you that something you did bothered them?

    Back of the card

You can imagine a simple example. Would you prefer a message or a private talk?

Puwedeng simpleng halimbawa lang. Mas gusto mo ba ng message o pribadong usapan?

  3. What is one thing I can say during a hard talk that helps you feel heard?

    Back of the card

Feeling heard often matters before finding a solution. A few clear words can help lower the need to defend.

  4. What should friends ask your permission to do?

    Back of the card

Your permission can depend on the situation; closeness does not make every answer a yes.

How to use them

Before you ask

Start the define-the-relationship talk with how things already feel rather than with “so, what are we?”: when you feel most at ease together, the moment it first felt like it could become something real, what you each want and are a little nervous to admit. Let the questions do the heavy lifting so neither of you has to make a speech.

The usual trap is waiting for a perfect moment, then blurting it out at the worst possible one: at the end of a date, half asleep, or by text. Pick a relaxed setting where you can see each other’s faces, and a time with no rush to be somewhere.

Go in the order of the groups. Gauge the feeling, say what you want (going first is generous), and only then talk about what being together would mean in practice: how often you text, what consistency looks like, how you’d talk through a hard moment. If you land in different places, that is information, not failure.

Good for

  • Deciding whether to be exclusive
  • Moving from talking stage to dating
  • Couples who never “officially” started
  • After a few months of casual dating
  • Clearing up mixed signals

Tips

  1. Say what you want before asking what they want. It’s braver and kinder.
  2. Use “I” statements: “I’d like…” lands softer than “Are we…”.
  3. Let silence happen. People need a beat to answer this honestly.
  4. If they need time, agree on when you’ll talk again.
  5. Whatever the answer, thank them for being honest.

How to bring it up

Name it lightly before you have it. Something like “I’d love to talk about where this is going, maybe this weekend?” gives the other person time to think, which most people appreciate more than being surprised.

Then start with a warm-up question and your own honest answer. A DTR is less frightening when it opens with something you both already know is good.

  • Where: a walk, a quiet bar, a couch. Not a crowded restaurant, not text.
  • When: a day you are both rested, with nothing scheduled right after.
  • What to say: what you feel and want, in your own words, before asking what they want.
  • What to avoid: ultimatums, comparing to exes, and asking for an answer on the spot if they need time.

Define the relationship

Frequently asked questions

What questions should you ask in a DTR talk?

Ask when they feel most at ease with you, what first made it feel like it could be real, what they want right now, and what being together would look like day to day. Share your own answers too.

When is the right time to define the relationship?

When you have been seeing each other regularly for a while and either of you is unsure where you stand. There is no fixed number of dates; uncertainty is the signal.

Should you have the DTR talk over text?

It is better in person or on a call, where tone and pauses help. A text can set it up, like asking to talk about where things are going this weekend.
